CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Mary Guarino (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) scored two goals and added one assist to lead Boston College 4-1 over Fairfield University (14-5-3) Wednesday in the opening round of the NCAA Championships at Newton Campus Soccer Field. BC advances to the second round of the NCAA's for the third time in the program's history. The Eagles play the tournament's eighth seed, Harvard, Sunday (Nov. 14) at 1 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass. BC improved to 15-6-1 overall, its best record in Head Coach Alison Foley's three-season tenure.
Guarino struck twice within the game's first six minutes, heading in Meghan Moore's (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) corner kick at 1:12. Freshman Colleen Danaher (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) passed to Lindsey Marshall (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day), who raced across the field fighting past two defenders to set up Guarino's second tally from the top of the box.
Before the half, Danaher added her first collegiate goal, pushing BC to a commanding 3-0 lead at the break. After outshooting the Stags 12-2 in the first 45 minutes, the Eagles continued the momentum into the second half when Morgan Page (Westerly, RI/Westerly) fed Moore's goal in the 48th minute. Sophomore Lindsey Marshall totaled two assists on the day.
JulieAnn Forman (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) looped the ball over BC goalkeeper, Courtney Schaeffer (South Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman), into the far post for Fairfield's lone score. She was assisted by Patricia Mendicino (Villanova, Penn.), who fed her down the left line. Schaeffer made one save in goal before leaving in the 72nd minute. Backup goalkeeper Alice Lehne (Troy, Mich./Seaholm) protected the three-goal lead with five minutes to go, slapping away a perfect pass to Forman, 20 yards out from the goal.
Fairfield's Anne Lyons (Lake Oswego, Ore.) accumulated eight saves while back Julie Stevens (Winchester, Mass.) made two consecutive defensive saves.
