CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Boston College junior Sarah Powell (Natick, Mass./Natick) was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week in a poll released Oct. 5, 1999. This was Powell's first appearance on the team, although, fellow Eagle Mary Guarino earned the national distinction earlier this season (Sept. 14).
The sweeper helped BC secure two shutouts last week (Sept. 27-Oct. 3) in three contests. The only opponent score came from the then 19th-ranked Connecticut team that defeated BC 1-0 Wednesday (Sept. 29). Powell's aggressive defensive play gave the Eagles a 56-33 shot advantage over the last three matches. She held the nation's leading scorer, Kelly Smith of Seton Hall, to two shots on free kick opportunities, sealing a 4-0 win over the Pirates Sunday (Oct. 3). The Eagles outshot Providence 23-5 in a 2-0 blanking just two days before.
"I think that it is well deserved," BC Head Coach Alison Foley said about the award. "I have said it all along, I think that she is the best defender in the BIG EAST and one of the best in the country."
Powell also received BIG EAST Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors Oct. 4, marking her second appearance on the list this season. She earned the same recognition Sept. 6 after anchoring a BC defense that allowed only one goal- from then #8 Hartford - in two games (192 minutes)
BC faces Syracuse Friday (Oct 8) in Syracuse. Game time is at 7 p.m.
