CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Mary Guarino (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) scored two goals, and the Boston College defense stood strong to collect its second consecutive shutout and sixth blanking of the season, downing Seton Hall 4-0 Sunday in Newton. The Eagles defeated Providence 2-0 Friday (Oct. 1) and are currently 8-3 with the win over the Pirates. The loss evens Seton Hall's record at 5-5.
Courtney Schaeffer (South Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) tied a season-high, nine-save performance for the third time this season to earn her sixth complete shutout and 22nd of her three-year career.
Guarino scored multiple goals for the second time this season. The last time was a hat trick in BC's 5-0 victory over Central Connecticut State, Sept. 15. She now leads the team with 10 goals and four assists for 24 points.
Morgan Page (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) added a goal and an assist for the third match this season. Her nine goals and four assists for 22 points is second among BC scorers.
Page struck early, receiving Meghan Moore's (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) cross from the right wing to send it in the far post. Guarino headed in Moore's corner kick in the 36th minute to increase BC's lead to 2-0. The corner kick was set up by Moore's blast that Pirate goalkeeper Leah Miller (Harrison, Ohio) slapped over the cross bar.
Janice Collein (Garden City, NY/Garden City) sent a through pass to Page ten yards out, who then shuffled the ball to Guarino for the Eagles' third tally. With 6:51 remaining, Muffin Rueckel (Westport, Conn./Staples) booted in Rachael Klemanski's (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) pass from the right wing from 10 yards out Rueckel, who scored her first collegiate goal in BC's win over Providence, recorded her second goal in as many games.
BC outshot the Pirates 27-15. Aggressive defense by Sarah Powell (Natick, Mass./Natick) limited the nation's top scorer Kelly Smith (Garston Watford Herts, England) to two shots on free kick opportunities. Through Sept. 26, Smith accumulated 16 goals and four assists.
The Eagles travel to Syracuse Friday Oct 8. Game time is at 7 p.m.
