CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - The Boston College women's soccer team earned its fifth shutout of the season, blanking BIG EAST foe Providence College Friday afternoon in Providence. BC (7-3) moved to 2-1 in the conference's Northeast Division while Providence (2-6) fell to 1-2.
The Eagle defense allowed only five shots in the match, forcing Courtney Schaeffer (South Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) to make only one save in her 21st career shutout and fifth in the season.
Muffin Rueckel (Westport, CT/Staples) contributed her first goal of the season to break a scoreless tie at the 68:01 mark, collecting a rebound from Morgan Page's (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) shot. PC goalkeeper Shayna Ross (Whitman, Mass.) made the initial save but could not control the ball as Rueckel punched it in off a scramble in front.
Mary Guarino (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) deposited the insurance goal at 83:24 off a precise centering pass from sophomore Lindsey Marshall (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day). Sophomore Meghan Moore (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) also added an assist on the goal. Guarino now has a team-leading offensive-point production of 20 with eight goals and four assists to date.
Ross had seven saves in between the posts for the Friars in the loss.
Boston College returns home Sunday (Oct. 3) to host Seton Hall in front of a Parent's Weekend crowd. Game time is at noon.
