Devlin S-AFE Trip: Day 1
January 10, 2017 | Devlin Student-Athlete Formation & Succe
Softball's Jordan Chimento and Volleyball's Brittany Pavich check in from New Orleans
For the eighth straight year, Boston College student-athletes are spending part of winter break in the New Orleans area on the Devlin S-AFE Trip. The week-long trip is centered on community service in partnership with SBP (formerly the St. Bernard Project), helping families rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina 11 years ago.Â
Each day, student-athletes will reflect on the day's activities. For more information about the trip and its purpose, check out the trip overview and check back for daily recaps.Â

Â
Yesterday (Sunday) was our first day on site. After early morning orientation at 6:30 a.m., we split into two groups and headed to our respective work sites. The lack of sleep from the night before really put a damper on the morning, especially since we were traveling together and had two flights canceled to Boston and had to fly directly to New Orleans to meet the rest of the group.
Â
We persevered through the morning as we laughed and sanded our hearts away. We not only got extremely messy leaving us with white hair, but we grew together as a team laughing and joking the time away.Â
Â
After a hard day's work, we returned to the house and got a quick workout in.
Â
Our amazing cooks, Jean and James, made us homemade gumbo for dinner to give us an authentic New Orleans meal.
Â
We then reflected as a group evaluating the day and how fortunate we all are.
Â
To end the day, we got a little competitive at the bowling alley. After the long intense game against some stud Tulane student-athletes, we hit the bunks watching the National Championship game, rooting on Clemson to the end. We always have to support ACC schools to victory!
Â
The first day was a successful one and we are looking forward to sanding and mudding the second day away.
