22 BC student-athletes will embark on a week-long service trip in the New Orleans area
On Sunday morning, a group of 22 Boston College Eagles are scheduled to depart Boston for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Spending a week in the New Orleans area, members of the field hockey, football, rowing, sailing, women's soccer, softball and volleyball teams will spend a week volunteering with SBP (formerly the St. Bernard Project) during the annual Devlin S-AFE Trip. This year marks the eighth such trip BC student-athletes have made.
The three main values of the S-AFE Trip include service, education and reflection – all core components of a Jesuit education.
Once in Louisiana, the student-athletes and the three support staff traveling will meet daily at an SBP worksite. While most work will be done to continue to revitalize the New Orleans area now more than 10 years post-Katrina, this year's trip will also include a one-day trek to Baton Rouge to help with projects after the recent devastating floods there.
Jen Kentera, Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development, notes that the trip has a deeper meaning to, and impact on, BC's students.
"The group is really excited to be able to spend this time over break getting give back to these communities that have been so hard hit by flooding, especially recently," Kentera said. "Being able to learn more about each family's story, the impact on the communities, as well as the culture of the area is a really eye-opening experience for so many who have never been to this part of the country. They are really honored to bring the BC motto of 'Men and Women for Others' with them and contribute what they can to the relief efforts."
Afternoons during the trip are meant to bring the service into regional context. This year, activities scheduled include a return visit to the New Orleans NFL-YET Boys and Girls Club, a visit to the The Presbytère Museum and the French Quarter, as well as time with Tulane student-athletes and a visit to LSU.
Each evening, the group comes together to reflect on the day, the trip and the meaning of "Men and Women for Others."
To prepare for the service trip, the student-athletes met on Saturday night on Boston College's campus with Chris Calderon, one of the chaplains who works with BC student-athletes, to lay a foundation of mindfulness, teamwork and an understanding of 'cura personalis.' | Read the Pre-Trip Blog Entry Here
