PHILADELPHIA (AP) - David Hawkins scored 21 of his career-high 36 points in the second half to lead Temple past Boston College 75-62 in a first-round NIT game Friday night.
The Owls (17-15) will play Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island in the second round Tuesday.
Boston College (19-12) rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit to go ahead by six on three occasions after the break. The Eagles led 49-43 when Maurice Collins hit two free throws. Hawkins' three-point play and a drive by Collins put the Owls ahead 49-48 with 12:17 left.
The Eagles trailed 59-55 with less than four minutes remaining when Collins broke up a two-on-one break. Collins passed to Hawkins, who laid the ball in, was fouled and made the free throw to give Temple a 62-57 lead. The Owls salted the game away from the free-throw line down the stretch.
Collins scored 17 points and Brian Polk added 12 for Temple.
Freshman Craig Smith led Boston College with 24 points. Big East Player of the Year Troy Bell scored 15 on 5-of-19 shooting.
