
Men's Basketball Wins In Overtime, 58-54

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore forward Craig Smith scored 14 points, including seven of the Eagles' final 14 points, to lead Boston College to a 58-54 overtime win over Kent State before 4,272 fans in Conte Forum.
Smith scored seven points in the game's first 35 minutes, before finishing strong. The sophomore had a dunk and two free throws in the final five minutes of regulation, then added one field goal and one free throw in the extra session.
Freshman Jared Dudley added 12 points, including an overtime three-pointer that gave BC the lead for good.
Boston College (8-1) took a 49-46 lead with 6.8 seconds remaining in regulation when Smith made a steal and converted two free throws after being fouled. Kent State (5-2) forced overtime when sophomore DeAndre Haynes hit a three-point field goal with 1.1 seconds to play.
Senior Bryan Bedford gave the visiting Golden Flashes a 51-49 lead with 4:08 left in overtime, before BC reeled off eight straight points. Dudley's three-pointer gave the Eagles a one-point advantage with 3:40 remaining on the clock. Smith added one field goal and senior Uka Agbai converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give BC a 57-51 margin with 46.1 seconds left.
Bedford hit a three-pointer with 35.0 seconds to play, trimming the BC lead to three points and snapping a scoreless streak of slightly more than 3:30. BC's Smith hit one free throw with 17.6 seconds left to finish the scoring.
Neither team shot 35.0 percent from the floor. Kent State shot 38.2 percent from the field in the first half and led 29-25 at the intermission. BC shot 34.8 percent in the second half and limited the visitors to 24.0 percent shooting (and just six field goals) to even the score. BC finished the game shooting 34.5 percent from the field, while the Golden Flashes shot 31.8 percent.
Freshman Devon Evertsen scored a career-high 10 points for the Eagles. Evertsen hit two three-pointers in 13 minutes of action.
Smith and Agbai each grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Agbai also added nine points, including BC's first six points of the game.
It was just the second meeting ever between the schools. Kent State beat BC 86-83 in OT last Dec. 28.
Game Notes: Dudley scored eight of BC's first 10 points in the second half. He assisted on the other two points, a field goal by Craig Smith ... Junior Nate Doornekamp contributed five points and four rebounds. He hit his first field goal of the day at 14:17 of the first half, then added the third three-pointer of his collegiate career just more than two minutes later ... BC committed just eight turnovers, while forcing 20 KSU miscues ... BC blocked seven shots, the most in one game since blocking seven against Boston University in the second game of the 2002-03 season ... BC made 10 steals ... The Eagles were outrebounded, 53-35. The 18-rebound differential is the greatest single-game rebounding margin by a BC opponent since Connecticut gained a 20-rebound advantage in the BIG EAST Tournament on March 8, 2000 ... BC's reserves outscored the KSU bench, 23-18.
