CLEVELAND (AP) - Antonio Gates scored a career-high 32 points and freshman DeAndre Haynes came up with two key loose balls in the final 10 seconds as Kent State outlasted Boston College 86-83 in overtime in the second game of the Balance Bar Rock-N-Roll Shootout in Gund Arena on Saturday night.
Troy Bell scored 29 points and Craig Smith added 28 for Boston College (6-3), which had a five-game winning streak snapped.
The Eagles and Golden Flashes (7-1) both played in the NCAA tournament last March. Kent State went to the Final Eight and finished the best season in school history at 30-6. The Eagles lost in the first round and finished 20-12.
Saturday night, Gates gave Kent State an 84-83 lead with a put-back with 28.1 seconds to play in overtime.
After a Boston College timeout, Haynes scrambled for a loose ball on the inbound play and passed to Eric Haut, who was fouled.
Haut, who scored all 22 of his points in the second half, made the first free throw with 8.6 seconds left, but missed the second. The rebound was tipped out and Haynes again won a scramble and was fouled.
The freshman made the second of two free throws to close out scoring with four seconds left.
The Eagles forced overtime after trailing 67-58 with 4:46 left in regulation.
Bell hit a 3-pointer with 2:30 left, and Smith scored on a spin move inside with 1:08 left to make it 70-69.
Haut made two free throws with 42 seconds left, but Bell hit a 15-footer 17 seconds later.
Haynes made one of two free throws with 18.9 seconds left for a 73-71 lead, but Bell drove down the lane and scored with 7.6 seconds to play in regulation for a 73-73 tie.
Bell and Smith combined to score 22 consecutive points for the Eagles over an 11:03 span - the final 8:23 of regulation and first 2:40 of overtime.
Haut hit two 3-pointers during a 15-5 Kent State run to open the second half that turned a 32-29 deficit into a 44-37 lead.
Boston College entered the game shooting just 28.3 percent from beyond the arc, but made 11-of-23 3-pointers overall.
Bell passed Danya Abrams for third place on the Boston College career scoring list with 2,060.
