CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Offensive balance and defensive tenacity keyed 25th-ranked Boston College in a 77-51 BIG EAST victory over Rutgers before a crowd of 7,611 in Conte Forum.
Senior Kenny Harley, sophomore Troy Bell and freshman Ryan Sidney each tallied 16 points for the Eagles. Senior Xavier Singletary netted 12 points and senior Jonathan Beerbohm added 11 points for the victors.
On the defensive end, Boston College forced 22 Rutgers turnovers, while limiting the Scarlet Knights to 17 field goals. Rutgers attempted just 38 shots from the field. Boston College shot 29-for-67 from the floor.
Boston College (13-2, 4-1 BIG EAST) led 19-16 with 5:07 to play in the opening half, before extending its advantage with a 10-2 run. The visitors closed the half with seven straight points to trim the BC margin to 29-25 at the break.
In the second half, BC led 33-32 with 14:56 to play, before using a 26-8 run over the next eight minutes to take a commanding 59-40 lead. Rutgers never closed the gap to fewer than 15 points in the final minutes.
Rutgers sophomore guard Todd Billet scored a game-high 22 points.
Game Notes: Boston College committed a season-low eight turnovers ... BC recorded 11 steals, marking the seventh time this season the team has made 10 or more steals ... Each team grabbed 33 rebounds ... Because of the difference in field goals attempted, Boston College won the game despite shooting a lower percentage than Rutgers. Rutgers shot 44.7 percent from the field, while Boston College shot 43.3 percent ... Ryan Sidney's 16-point effort marked his career high. While he tied for the team lead in scoring, he led the team in rebounding with six ... Harley shot 4-for-6 from three-point range, setting a career-high for three-pointers made.
