STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State senior Jarrett Stephens recorded his first double-double of the season with 21 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in leading the undefeated Nittany Lions to an 85-57 victory Saturday afternoon over Boston College.
Stephens' 21-point effort was offset by the double-figure scoring of freshman Jon Crispin and junior Titus Ivory with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Penn State's starters outscored Boston College's 63-34.
The first half saw Penn State build an eight-point lead, 19-11, before Boston College (2-1) went on a 19-8 run for its biggest lead of the game, 30-27. However, the Nittany Lions closed the last five minutes of the half on a huge 18-2 run of their own to take a commanding 49-34 halftime lead.
Penn State then used its defense, control of the boards and transition game to stop Boston College from gaining any second-half momentum. The Nittany Lions outscored the Eagles 36-23 over the final 20 minutes to run their non-conference winning streak to 42.
Boston College, hitting just 33 percent from the field for the game, were led by Troy Bell (12), Jonathan Beerbohm (11) and Xavier Singletary (10).
Penn State got 18 points off turnovers, recorded 16 points on transition and had 22 second-chance points while holding Boston College's big three of Bell, Singletary and Brian Ross, 23 points below their season scoring average.
