His coaching started at Connecticut College as the assistant for the men’s and women’s tennis teams (2012-14). In 2015, Lomax became an assistant coach for the men’s tennis team at Bryant and was promoted to associate head coach the following year. During his tenure, the Bulldogs won four conference titles with four NCAA appearances. In 2017, Bryant became the first Northeast Conference program to win a set at the NCAA Tournament.Â
As a player, Lomax has been ranked number one in New England five times and ranked in the top-10 a total of 10 times. At the national level, he has been ranked in the top-10 twice, including a No. 2 ranking in 2006.
In 2010, he left a successful corporate career to start his own sport psychology consulting practice, PerformanceXtra, mainly working with top junior tennis players and academies.
For nearly a decade, he has been the mental skills trainer at the Manchester Athletic Club Tennis Academy, the New England Academy of Tennis, the New England Tennis Academy, and at Fore Court (Rhode Island). He has also been the mental skills trainer for USTA sectional and regional camps.
In his practice, he works with athletes in a variety of sports including baseball, soccer, lacrosse, figure skating, volleyball, swimming, golf, football, and luge.
Lomax has also served as the mental skills trainer for several athletic teams at the Division I level such as Bryant, Brown, and Holy Cross. At Bryant, his teams won nine conference titles and were runners up four times. At the DIII level, he worked with the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Regis College, who won nine conference titles during his time with the program.
Lomax has degrees from Vanderbilt University (BA in Spanish and Political Science, 1989) and the University of Missouri (M.Ed. in Sport Psychology, 2015). He is currently working on his doctorate in Sport and Performance Psychology from the University of Western States.
Lomax is the author of a book on mental toughness entitled The Mentally Tough Competitor: Mindsets and Perspectives to Achieve Excellence.
