STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT: SERVICE
Boston College student-athletes have a unique platform to further the University mission, "Men and Women for Others" and translate the skills they hone in their choice of sport into positive lasting impact in the community. The aim of Service programming is engage the student-athlete in service to his or her campus and surrounding communities.
Through the generosity of Michael and Matt Devlin, student-athletes' impact will reach an even greater audience through their establishment of the Katharine B. and Robert M. Devlin Student-Athletes for Education (S-AFE) and Leadership Development Program. The Devlin S-AFE program includes:
- HEAR Program (Help Educate through Athletic Responsibility)
- Groups for 5-10 students visit local schools to share their stories of success to encourage the pursuit of further education.
- Franciscan Hospital for Children
- Bi-monthly visits to local children's hospital for children with a variety of mental, physical, and behavioral issues. Student-athletes visit different areas of the hospital and play cards, video games, and sports. Twice a year, at Christmas and Easter, the Lacrosse program visits to decorate holiday themed cookies.
- Food for Families
- Monthly visit to Commonwealth Tenants Association to package food from food bank to deliver to needy families.
- Student-Athlete Service Immersion Trip
- During the last week of the winter break, a group of 22 student-athletes and two staff members travel to New Orleans, La., to assist in the city's recovery from Hurricane Katrina. The group stays at a local church and shares meals with other university groups from around the country. The group has the opportunity to work with the St. Bernard Project, founded by CNN Hero of the Year and Boston College graduate, Liz McCartney. The group splits and works on two houses as general contractors working on the particular stage the house is in whether it is demolition, hanging drywall, mudding etc. As a part of the trip, the Tulane University SAAC welcomes the group to their campus for an athletic event and an informal get-together
- SAAC Talent Show
- The culmination of a semester's work, several teams put together a performance for the end of year show. Past winners include the sailing team and the football team.
