Cavaliere Cards Opening Round 72 at 123rd U.S. Open

LOS ANGELES - Christian Cavaliere shot a 2-over 72 in his opening round at the 123rd U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club.

The 2020 Boston College graduate sits in a tie for 83rd place. The top 60 on the leaderboard - including ties - make the cut into weekend play in the major championship.

"I'm happy with how I handled my nerves because I was really nervous, but I left a lot out there," Cavaliere said, post-round. "The experience is incredible - my family is here, my friends are here. It's the most fun I have ever had. I'm trying to take it all in and enjoy the journey."

Teeing off in the final group of the day from the 10th hole, Cavaliere was 1-over through the first 12 holes of play. After back-to-back bogeys on the par 3 4th hole and par 4 5th, Cavaliere carded birdies on the par 4 6th and par 5 8th holes.

Among the 19 amateur players in the field, Cavaliere is tied for fifth. He will tee off during Friday's second round of play at 11:57 am ET / 8:57 am local on the first hole.
