CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Mike Laprey has been promoted to the role of Associate Athletics Director for Communications, it was announced today by William V. Campbell Director of Athletics Blake James. Â
Laprey will oversee the day-to-day operation of the communications office, developing communication strategies to promote each of Boston College's 31 athletic teams. He will continue to serve as the Eagles' primary contact for the men's basketball team, while overseeing the media relations efforts for the football program.
"We are thrilled to elevate Mike into this permanent role as the Associate Athletics Director for Communications," said James. "Mike's wealth of experience, his long-standing relationships with local and national media, along with his core values and strong track record of success in leadership roles are an ideal fit for Boston College Athletics."
A 25-year veteran in collegiate communications, Laprey joined the Boston College Athletics Communications staff as an associate director in 2017 and has been serving as the interim Associate AD for Communications since March 2022. Throughout his time at BC, Laprey has led the communications and creative content efforts for the men's basketball team, expanding and enhancing team archives and record books while prioritizing creativity, engagement, and audience growth on the team's social media outlets. He also serves as the secondary sport administrator with the women's rowing program and is on the organizing committee for the annual Golden Eagle Awards.
Prior to coming to The Heights, Laprey spent 11 years at Rhode Island, most recently as Associate Athletics Director for Communications & New Media. He served as Chief Communications Officer and advisor to the Director of Athletics on all departmental matters. A key member of the athletics' external relations team, Laprey was responsible for developing cross-channel marketing and promotional plans with the goal of growing revenue and branding opportunities. He spearheaded two comprehensive redesigns of GoRhody.com in 2012 and 2016 and was a senior administrative stakeholder on the URI Athletics strategic plans in 2012 and 2017. He was the sport administrator for the Rams' men's basketball and women's tennis programs.
Â
Before URI, Laprey spent the 2005-06 academic year at Marquette - the Golden Eagles' first season as a member of the Big East conference - as an assistant communications director. Prior to his time in Wisconsin, Laprey spent seven years at Iona elevating from assistant media relations director to Associate Athletics Director. While at Iona, he was in charge of all media relations efforts for the Gaels' 21 varsity sports and played a major role in the department's 2003 rebranding campaign. He began at Iona in 1998, serving a dual role as a graduate assistant in the sports information office and an assistant coach for the Gaels' nationally ranked men's cross country team before being promoted to Assistant AD in 2000.
Â
Laprey began his professional career as a media relations assistant at the Big East Conference during the 1997-98 academic year.
A 1997 graduate of Fairfield University with a degree in economics and philosophy, Laprey was an undergraduate assistant in the Fairfield sports information office. He was a three-year letterman for the Stags cross country squad and was president and co-founder of the Fairfield University Track Club. He also served as head men's basketball manager for the Stags' 1995-96 NIT season and served in the same capacity for the women's team in 1996-97.
He earned a masters degree in journalism from Iona College in 2003 and is a 2020 graduate of Boston College with a master's degree in sports administration.
