Huang and Hughes to Represent Fencing at NCAA Championships
March 16, 2022 | Fencing
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College fencing team has two of its men's fencers representing the Eagles in the 2022 NCAA Fencing Championships hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana at the Castellan Family Fencer Center, March 24-27.
The men's portion begins tomorrow morning with Round Robin play with the first three rounds throughout the day in epee, foil and saber. Epee starts at 9 a.m. ET before foil at 11 a.m. and saber starting at 1:30 p.m.Â
Boston College is one of 27 schools who are sending athletes to the four-day event, while Bin Huang (Foil) and Levi Hughes (Epee) will represent the eighth-ranked Eagles. The pair helped Boston College earn its first top-10 ranking in program history. BC finished second as a team at the ACC Championship earlier this season, with wins over ranked opponents in Duke and North Carolina. Huang and Hughes are two of 22 fencers from the ACC to make the trip to South Bend.Â
The championships include individual events in each of six weapons (men's épée, men's foil, men's sabre, women's épée, women's foil and women's sabre).
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places, and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
