BC takes home both two awards - a gold medal and silver medal - at the annual awards presentation
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College Athletics took home two major awards as part of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) annual "Best Of" awards.  The 2020-21 award winners were announced to the membership during the organization's Virtual Awards Ceremony.
BC won the gold medal award in the Fan Giveaway Promotion category, for its #RingThatBell campaign. In keeping with the tradition of ringing the stadium bell at home games after every Eagles' touchdown, field goal, and safety. Due to attendance restrictions due to the global pandemic, bells were sent to every season ticket member and former football player to replicate this tradition at home, allowing them to connect with game days. Houston won silver and Oklahoma took home the bronze in this category.
In the Virtual or In-Venue Event Attendance category, Boston College captured the silver medal award for its Friends television show-themed promotion in connection with a men's ice hockey game. Â
In honor of the 25th anniversary of the popular American television sitcom, BC hosted a Friends-themed game on February 21, 2020 against Northeastern. Fans whose name was the same as one of the main characters (Chandler, Joey, Phoebe, Rachel, Ross, or Monica) received free admission as the event connected both hockey fans and fans of the TV show under one roof. In keeping with the theme of the show, the game was titled "The One Where…Boston College Played Northeastern" - similar to the name of every Friends episode - and all promotion and creative content was centered around iconic moments from the show. Inside Kelley Rink, fans could take pictures with different Friends-related props, including the "Central Perk" backdrop and all fans received an exclusive BC Hockey/Central Perk coffee mug. Several Friends-related video elements were shown throughout the game on the arena video boards, including a re-enactment of the iconic theme song and intro of the show with members of the Eagles' team. BC earned a 10-1 victory and surpassed its goals for increasing attendance and revenue for the single-game. Penn State took the gold in the category, while Texas received the bronze.
Initiated in 2003, the NACMA "Best Of" Awards program honors outstanding achievement in marketing and promotions. Awards are presented in 16 categories, with each category divided into three groups based upon school size and conference affiliations to promote fairness.
