
Eagles Keep Postseason Hopes Alive With Comeback Win

BC trailed after the first and third sets before staging a dramatic fifth-set comeback over Virginia.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Boston College volleyball team defeated Virginia, 3-2, in five sets at Power Gym on Friday afternoon. The Eagles evened their overall record at 16-16 and improved to 6-12 in the ACC.
BC trailed after the first and third sets before setting up a dramatic fifth-set comeback. The Eagles trailed 5-1 in the deciding set before calling timeout. The two sides traded point until the Cavaliers (8-20, 1-17) built a commanding 10-5 advantage.
A kill from graduate middle blocker Amaka Chukwujkekwu (Laurel, Md.) shifted the tide and started a 6-1 run, which included two aces from sophomore outside hitter Alayna Crabtree (Normal, Ill.), to tie the set at 11-11.The Eagles' first lead of the set came after a kill from senior outside hitter Mackenzie Fuhrmann (Berkley Heights, N.J.) pushed the game to match-point.
Boston College won the match by scores of 20-25, 25-14, 14-25, 25-18 and 15-13.
Junior middle blocker Gabby McCaa (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Chukwujekwu were dominant at the net for the Eagles. McCaa became just the 10th player in program history to record 10 or more blocks in a single match. She tallied 11, nine through the first four sets, which is tied for the fifth most in a match in BC history. Offensively, McCaa added six kills and played error-free on a .600 attack rate. Chukwujekwu contributed eight kills, while hitting .312, with six blocks.
Graduate outside hitter Clare Naughton (Atlanta, Ga.) netted a team-high 12 kills and added six digs. Guiding the offense were sophomore setters Grace Penn (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Sophia Lambros (Fullerton, Calif.) with 18 and 16 assists, respectively. Lambros added 15 digs in the double-double effort and sophomore libero Anna Murphy (Zoinsville, Ind.) picked up a team-high 17.
