ACC suspends all athletic activities in response to COVID-19
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – In support of actions taken by the ACC, Boston College joins the other 14 ACC institutions to suspend all athletic activities until further notice in response to COVID-19.
Â
Later in the day, the NCAA announced that the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships, are canceled.
Â
Statement from the NCAA:
"This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."
Â
Statement from the Atlantic Coast Conference:
"The Atlantic Coast Conference has suspended all athletic related activities including all competition, formal and organized practice, recruiting and participation in NCAA championships until further notice. The decision was made following consultation with the league's presidents and athletic directors to mitigate the further spread of COVID-19."
Â
Statement from ACC Commissioner John Swofford
"This is uncharted territory and the health and safety of our student-athletes and institutions remains our top priority. This decision is aimed to protect from the further spread of COVID-19."
Â
Statement from Hockey East:
"The Hockey East Association has announced that the 2020 Hockey East Men's Tournament will not be played due to concerns over the COVID-19 health situation."
Â
Statement from Boston College Athletics Director Martin Jarmond
"This is a challenging time for all of us and the health and safety of our student-athletes, staff and community remains our top priority and concern. We fully support the decision by the Atlantic Coast Conference to suspend all athletic related activities and the cancellation of the Hockey East Men's Tournament."
