Welcome to ACC Unity Week
October 24, 2020 | Boston College Athletics, Devlin Student-Athlete Formation & Succe
Boston College and its fellow league members band together for racial and social justice.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College athletics, along with its fellow league members, take part in the ACC Unity Week Oct. 24-31. Developed through the ACC's Committee for Racial and Social Justice (CORE – Champions of Racial Equity), ACC Unity Week unites the league's 15 institutions with a focus on equity, justice, diversity and inclusion.
Â
ACC Unity Week is a campaign to promote togetherness as it relates to the conference, its teams and fans.
Â
At BC, the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Initiative (DEI) was established to provide inclusive programming and equitable resources that meet the university's diverse student-athlete population and to engage in civic responsibility in service and outreach to the Boston area marginalized communities and beyond. DEI also aims to align with university, conference and NCAA values, priorities and commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion. The DEI committee also seeks to engage and learn from BC alumni in an effort to enhance the overall student-athlete experience.
Â
"It's important for everyone to get on board," stated DEI committee chairperson Jewel Strawberry, who plays for the volleyball team. "In order to make change, it takes every single voice, every single person doing their part. Everyone has a part so it takes everyone to make the change."
Â
Boston College athletics and its student-athletes announced the establishment of the DEI committee's "Eagles For Equality" mission back in September. BC's fall sports teams have all worn "Eagles For Equality" branded team-issued apparel, including football helmets adorned with an "Equality" sticker, during competition.
Â
"This summer, during our meetings, we wanted to come up with something that would really drive our work, and Eagles for Equality was born in our group," added Strawberry. "Everything that we do, goes back to Eagles for Equality. One thing as a committee that we really want to emphasize is that this isn't just something for show or a performative type of thing like this is something that's long term and should stay present and relevant. Ten years from now, I should be able to come back here and see the DEI committee and see Eagles for Equality and see the change that we were starting now."
