The students celebrated a year of commitment to leadership training
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College athletics department finished the inaugural year of the Eagles Leadership Institute as the academic year is quickly coming to an end. The program was part of BC's commitment to student-athletes' experience and personal growth as leaders and positive change makers on their teams and in the world beyond.
Â
The sixth and final session was held in the middle of April in the Yawkey Center's Murray Room and it combined Rising and Veteran Eagle levels. The student-athletes were treated to a seated dinner where they got to get to know each other better and share their experiences and challenges as they continue to grow their leadership support network.
Â
The event marked a celebration of the time and energy they had put in over the year to become more knowledgeable and impactful leaders. It culminated with a panel who shared their unique experiences as leaders in sport and now in their professional lives.
Â
The panelists included Fr. Tony Penna, associate vice president and director of campus ministry, Kerri Shields, former BC women's basketball player (2009-13) and current BC color commentator, and Katie King Crowley, BC's head women's ice hockey coach, two-time Olympian, national team coach and former Brown women's ice hockey and softball student-athlete. It was moderated by Vaughn Williams, a senior associate athletics director – administration.
Â
The panel discussion included the participants' journeys and connections to BC, Boston College's uniqueness and its Jesuit values and emphasis on serving others, how being a part of BC has impacted their experiences, especially in terms of being a leader and what leadership can look like.
Â
To honor the efforts of the student-athletes, those who will be returning to The Heights in the fall will be elevated to the next level. A new level will be launched – Golden Eagles – for returning seniors.
