The former OSU deputy AD speaks to BCAD about career development and more
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – William V. Campbell Director of Athletics Martin Jarmond welcomed former Ohio State Deputy Director of Athletics Miechelle Willis to Boston College on Monday to speak to members of the Boston College Athletics Department. Recently retired, Willis discussed leadership and communication skills, as well as career development with many BC staff members.
Â
Willis was on the Buckeyes' athletics staff for 20 years and was in athletics administration for nearly 30 years. While in Columbus as the deputy AD, she served as the primary advisor to athletics director Gene Smith, provided oversight for the department's day-to-day operations and served as the primary decision maker in Smith's absence.
Â
"Miechelle Willis is one of the best in the business. I had the good fortune of working with her and her commitment to serving student athletes was second to none," Jarmond said. "It was great having her on campus visiting with our athletics staff."
Â
Willis' day in Chestnut Hill began by meeting with BC's executive and senior staffs in which she discussed coaching and managing others, steps to provide the best possible student-athlete experience and keyed in on communication. She met with the women's basketball staff to talk about cultivating leaders within the program, creating a culture that can be passed down to each class and developing effective communication skills with student-athletes.
Â
Willis broke for lunch with many of the female employees in the department, giving career advice and speaking about her past experiences and mentors. She ended her day addressing BC's intern class, allowing the young professionals to ask questions about her career path and advice on future endeavors.
Â
Willis' presence at The Heights was part of Jarmond's professional development efforts within the BC Athletics Department.
Â
Willis began her athletics career as a track coach before transitioning to administration. Her first administrative position was at Temple, where she spent seven years, and included serving as the primary administrator for 11 women's varsity sports and held department-wide responsibilities in the areas of compliance, personnel, student-athlete services and drug and alcohol education and testing. While at Ohio State, Willis served as the Senior Woman Administrator to the NCAA and the Big Ten Conference and served on numerous national, conference and campus committees. She served on the Division I Management Council and the NCAA Division I Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Issues Cabinet, as well as the Big Ten Legislative Review Committee. She is still part of the NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four committee, which will be held in Columbus, Ohio.
