Women's soccer is rolling, the women's hockey schedule is here, and more!
During their 1-2 start to the season, the Boston College women's soccer team began planting the seeds for their future success. Its 1-0 loss to Vanderbilt represented a complete team effort and a strong performance, even as it failed to score a goal and absorbed a loss.
Coming out of that start, the Eagles have been on a tear, winning four of their last five games. Following wins over Colgate and Stony Brook, BC took steps to establish itself as Boston's city champion with a 2-1 over Northeastern. And after suffering a 1-0 setback to Harvard on Thursday, the Eagles dominated Boston University at home, winning 3-0 to keep the streak rolling.
Against the Terriers, Sam Coffey scored twice, including BC's first goal in the 19th minute and third goal in the 69th minute. Lauren Berman added a penalty kick in the 49th minute as Alexis Bryant stopped all six BU shots she faced in net.
"It was a local battle with a lot of physical play," head coach Alison Foley said. "We were happy we kept our focus defensively and I thought Alexis was great. BU is always a competitive match so we are pleased with that result."
That defensive focus is continuing to buoy the Eagles. Entering the season with only two seniors and four freshmen at the position, the younger roster hasn't missed a beat. Senior Allyson Swaby is developing into a force, anchoring a unit that's seen a quick adjustment to the college level. Players like Gianna Mitchell fit in seamlessly, providing two-way support; Mitchell has two goals and an assist on five shots this year.
And with Bryant in goal, the unit is becoming a complete team. The redshirt junior has a .655 save percentage with 19 saves on the year. The BU game was her second shutout of the season but first on Newton Campus.
Now 5-3 overall on the season and 3-1 at home, BC has one last nonconference tuneup before ACC play begins. After Thursday's tilt with St. John's at 7 p.m., the Eagles dive right into conference matches this weekend when Louisville comes to town on Sunday. Both games will be at home, where BC is now 11-3-1 dating back to last year.

While fall season is in full swing, it's easy to overlook the oncoming rush of winter sports. But the women's hockey team released its full schedule this week. With just about three weeks until their season opener, it's almost acceptable to once again proclaim that winter is coming.
The women's hockey team is always a national powerhouse, and its schedule reflects that. BC opens the season at the beginning of October against Minnesota Duluth, a fellow national power who finished last season as the No. 5 team in the nation. Though last year was its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2011, UMD is a five-time national champion in the ultra-competitive WCHA.
The schedule is loaded with some exciting matchups, including games against a Quinnipiac team that won 21 games last year but missed the NCAA Tournament after losing in the ECAC Quarterfinals to Princeton. There's a home-and-home with Harvard; BC plays at Bright-Landry Hockey Center in November with a return match in Conte Forum in January.
And there's the Beanpot, where BC plays Northeastern in the first round. That sets the potential for a third matchup with the Crimson, who draw BU in the preliminary.
Speaking of that Beanpot, BC hosts this year, with preliminary and championship rounds at Conte Forum on the first two Tuesdays in February.

Though it's a young team in the process of laying foundational groundwork, it's impressive to see how far the volleyball team is coming in a short amount of time. The Eagles are under .500, but they've yet to be shut out of a win over a weekend. Last weekend continued that trend in Philadelphia when they rallied from a loss to Temple to defeat Delaware.
Though BC faces an uphill battle with the oncoming ACC schedule, this upcoming weekend provides it an opportunity to finish nonconference matches with an even record. On Thursday, the Eagles head to Harvard to take on the Crimson before heading back up the street on Saturday for a 7 p.m. match at Northeastern.

The upcoming weekend will ratchet up the competition level. Men's soccer continues ACC play at No. 10 Clemson, the national runner up from two years ago and No. 3 team in last year's NCAA Tournament. The game can be seen at 7 p.m. on the ACC Regional Sports Network, available locally in New England on NESNPlus.
Field hockey also contines its ACC schedule as the Eagles' precursor to Saturday's football game. The Eagles will travel to Carolina's Research Triangle to face No. 7 North Carolina at noon, taking on a BC team ranked at No. 10.Â
That leads into the 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Alumni Stadium against Notre Dame. Notre Dame technically isn't an ACC rival in football, but it's hard to imagine a game against the Fighting Irish that doesn't carry weight.Â
