Four field hockey players spend part of their summers across the pond
Four members of the Boston College field hockey team spent the first part of their summers studying in another part of the world, embracing a new culture. Juniors Kaitie Fink, Ymke Rose Gote and Frederique Haverhals and sophomore Brigid Wood traveled across the Atlantic to immerse themselves before returning to The Heights to prepare for the 2017 field hockey season. Each wrote about their experiences and shared photos from their time abroad.
Kaitie Fink - IrelandÂ
This past June I chose to spend a month learning about the "Business, Politics, and History of Sports" in Ireland. Â It was a great experience living in a different country while also getting to learn
more about sports. Â My favorite experience was getting to play Gaelic games which include handball, Gaelic football and hurling.Â
Here are pictures of our trip to Aviva Stadium, kayaking on the Corrib River in Galway, our trip to the Cliffs of Mohr and a picture of my class where we played Gaelic football.

Ymke Rose Gote - Madrid
For my economics major I decided to take a class in Madrid on the economics of developing countries. Being in Madrid was a great experience for me because, different from when I'm in Boston, there was no time difference from my home in The Netherlands, but I was still studying abroad. I didn't expect much from Madrid itself, but it was beautiful! I love the Spanish culture and especially the food. That's probably why we went to the same restaurant (called Lateral for people going to Madrid, recommended by Rafa (Raphael Salama), who plays on the BC men's soccer team) five times during our stay! The people in Madrid were very friendly and open and the area I lived in (Malansaña), which was a great place to just wonder around, have a snack or shop a little in the boutiques.Â
The strangest experience was watching a bullfight. Before we went people already warned us that it would be gruesome, but we felt like we had to go just for the experience. After three fights and three dead bulls we had seen enough bullfights for the rest of our lives.Â
But overall the endless shops, terraces and beautiful parks in Madrid were worth it! I would recommend studying abroad and especially to go and see Madrid! And try the churros with hot chocolate. they are best thing ever!Â

Brigid Wood - Dublin
Traveling to Ireland has always been a dream of mine growing up as an Irish dancer in a family that is very proud of its Irish heritage. When I came across the opportunity of taking managerial accounting, a core class in the Carroll School of Management abroad in Dublin, it seemed like the perfect fit. The month I spent in Ireland was the most amazing time and I am forever grateful to Boston College for giving me the opportunity.Â
Here are photos crossing the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge in Northern Ireland, sitting on a ledge at the Cliffs of Moher, riding bikes on Inis Mor, which is the largest of the three Aran Islands, and Â
exploring Inis Mor.

Frederique Haverhals - Madrid
I went to Madrid with Ymke Rose this summer to study International Marketing at Saint Louis University Madrid. It was an amazing experience! The class itself was super interesting and the teachers were incredible. In my class, we learned to do economic research to a continent, to figure out were we would be able to launch a new product we had  been assigned. Subsequently, we had to some up with a marketing plan for a successful launch in the countries we had specifically chosen in accordance to our economic research. I had was assigned the continent of Latin America, where we decided to launch our product, Kombucha Tea, in Chile.
The experience of being in Madrid was incredible as well. We met a ton of great people and got to see a lot of the city and its culture. Madrid is literally in the center of the country, so we had the opportunity to travel as well. I personally went to Barcelona and Sevilla. Sevilla was my definitely favorite, mainly because I went skydiving, which has been on my bucket list for ages. We had the chance to visit almost all the cultural sights Madrid has to offer.
