Chestnut Hill, Mass. – The Boston College men's basketball team shocked No. 1 Duke in front of a sell-out crowd at Conte Forum on Saturday, Dec. 9. Sophomore Ky Bowman led the team with 30 points as the Eagles defeated the Blue Devils, 89-84, to hand Duke its first loss of the season.
BC closed out the game with a 15-5 run and shot a stunning 15-of-26 (57.7 percent) from the three-point line. Head coach Jim Christian knows that the upset will always be a memory of a lifetime for him and his team.
The Eagles accurate shooting largely factored into the win, but the poise of the young team down the stretch was just as important.
"I just thought the whole time, the poise of our kids when they were up four, never rattled, we stayed with what we did," Christian said. "There were so many, so many winning plays out there."
The Blue Devils had spent 134 weeks at No.1. With the loss to BC, they fell to No. 4 in the polls. The victory was only the third win for the Eagles against the Blue Devils in program history and the first time they defeated Duke since 2009.
The victory marked the fourth time in program history that BC has defeated a top-ranked team. The Eagles have beaten each of the past three top-team that they have faced, including Syracuse in 2014 and North Carolina in 2009.
With more than half of the season still left to play, the Eagles know that they have to carry the momentum from the win against Duke into their future games.
The basketball team now has three straight home contests, beginning with Columbia on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.
