Eagles begin spring slate against No. 23 Virginia
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College women's tennis team kicks off its 2017 dual match season with an ACC battle at 11 a.m. Saturday, when the Eagles visit No. 23 Virginia. The Eagles began last spring with a 4-3 loss to then-No.7 Virginia before winning four-straight matches.
Â
"We are very excited to get the season started," said head coach Nigel Bentley. "We are very balanced throughout the lineup. We have four talented freshman who will be playing significant roles. Everybody is very focused and we are ready to compete hard at UVA on Saturday."Â
Â
BC returns plenty of proven talent, including junior Asiya Dair and senior Lexi Borr, both of whom earned all-ACC third-team honors in 2016.
Â
Dair enters the season fourth in the Oracle/ITA Division I Northeast rankings and 103rd nationally. She had a strong fall season, going 5-0 at the Bulldog Invitational and 5-1 at the Harvard Fall Classic, along with advancing to the ITA Northeast Regional quarterfinals. Dair finished 12-6 in dual singles play last spring, helping lead the Eagles as a sophomore.
Â
Borr, who ranks eighth in the northeast, went 4-1 at the Bulldog Invitational and made the ITA Northeast Regional quarterfinals. She finished 10-13 in singles play last spring, including a 7-8 clip in first singles.
Â
The Eagles also return sophomore Jackie Urbinati and senior Emily Safron. Urbinati and Borr went 9-12 in first doubles last season. Safron finished 12-10 in singles play last season, ending the year with four straight victories. She also went 9-7 in doubles last spring with Katya Vasilyev – one of four players who graduated last year.
Â
Four freshmen will also get their first taste of dual action. Among them, Elene Tsokilauri went 6-3 in singles and 4-2 in doubles last fall. Freshman Dasha Possokhova went 6-5 in singles and 6-5 in doubles in the fall.
Â
The Eagles will once again face a tough ACC schedule. They will host three of the nation's top teams when they face No. 2 North Carolina (Sunday, March 5), No. 12 Miami (Friday, March 24), No. 10 Duke (Sunday, April 9). BC also visits No. 11 Georgia Tech on Friday, April 14. Last season, both NCAA singles finalists and three semifinalists were ACC players.
Â
BC will play its first home match Saturday, Feb. 11 against Rhode Island at the Flynn Recreational Complex.
