Former and current Eagles share their favorite Alumni Stadium memories
By: Kwani Lunis, Eagles Unlimited Contributor
In less than 24 hours the excitement of college game day will return to The Heights. Throughout lower campus, grills will be aflame to before the 1 p.m. kickoff against the Wagner Seahawks. Saturdays in the fall start a bit earlier than usual as parents, students, alumni and guests prep for the showdown in Alumni Stadium. We asked some former Eagles about their favorite memories on and around the turf. Here's what they had to say.Â
Pete Frates - Baseball (2004-07):
My favorite memories of Boston College are being with the fellas, through thick and thin. Traveling was always great but there was nothing like playing the game I love at home with 30 of your best buds. That is what I will cherish the most.
Chris Shaw - Baseball (2012-14):
My best memory in Alumni Stadium would be upsetting ninth-ranked USC at the Red Bandanna Game in memory of Welles Crowther. It was incredible to witness the fans' reaction to Welles' parents and honor him with such an amazing win.
Ellen Burr - Rowing (2011-2015):
My freshman year, my class held the flag for the national anthem at a game. It was Homecoming Weekend and it really made me feel like a part of the greater Boston College community very early on in my BC experience.
Keady Segel - Men's soccer (2011-14):
Beating ninth-ranked USC in Alumni is a memory that will always stick with me. The atmosphere of the Saturday night primetime game was electric and the SuperFans were roaring. Storming the field when the clock hit zero was a once in a lifetime moment as a college football fan and I am honored that it happened in one of my final times attending a game as a student at Alumni Stadium.
Courtney Cox – Cheer (2010-12):
My favorite memory of BC athletics was my first football game as a cheerleader. That first game of my freshman year was also Mark Herzlich's first game back after overcoming cancer. As he led the team out of the tunnel at Alumni, I had goose bumps looking around at the whole school who was out to support one of their own. I felt the BC community all in that second and it's a moment I will never forget.Â
Kerri Shields- Women's basketball (2009-2013):
Football games at BC were some of my favorite memories from my four years. Every home game, my teammates and I would enter the game at least an hour early to get our seats, which were the first two rows on the 40-yard line behind the BC bench. It was great team bonding time and the best seats in the stadium to watch the games. Some of my close friends also played for the team, so it was really cool to be able to see them in their element and to be there to support them. One of my favorite game memories was my sophomore year when we played Notre Dame at home. We got to Alumni two hours early to make sure we reserved our usual seats. I distinctly remember waiting in Conte for our favorite security guard (Mary!) to give us the go ahead to run to our seats. Even though we lost, the environment was amazing. Our school spirit was at an all-time high. The stadium was packed, the fans were crazy and the guys put up a great fight. My whole team was there and we had a great time cheering on the Eagles. I'm forever grateful for those memories!
Manuel Asprilla – Football (2011-2015):
Most people would say that their most memorable moment was the upset win over USC in 2014, but not me. To be honest I would say that I miss the minutes we spent in the locker room before cold, early morning workouts. I miss the conversations we had, the complaints we all agreed upon, appreciated the naps under three minutes before getting chewed up by the coaches in the meetings and most importantly, the family bond we all shared. I can barely talk to people about our wins and losses, but I can say that when people ask me about my experience at BC, the only thing I can think about are those terrible days that we hated at the time. Not one person can say they don't miss that.
