Boston icons Paul Revere and Sam Adams unveiled as part of Boston’s College Athletics New Marketing Campaign
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - This past summer, Boston College Athletics announced a marketing initiative to widen the footprint and visibility of its sports teams throughout the entire city, tying everyone together to celebrate "Boston's College." The campaign's intention is to tie the Eagles' sports icons with iconic figures and moments associated with the historic city.
That will now take a step further with the introduction of two new mascots for the Eagles: Paul Revere and Sam Adams. Two legendary names and symbols of the American Revolution, these mascots will be prominently featured on game day at Alumni Stadium on campus, and throughout the year at events in the city of Boston.
Adams, a politician recognized as one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, was a member of the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He is widely regarded as one of the leading proponents of colonial independence from Great Britain. Following the American Revolution's success, Adams became the governor of Massachusetts, serving in the capacity from 1793 to 1797.
He'll be joined by silversmith and engraver Revere, a name made most famous by his "Midnight Ride" to warn American patriots about the advancing British troops. Immortalized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem in the 1860s, it remains to be seen if he'll be lighting "One if by Land" if Boston College scores a touchdown on the ground. Today, locals and visitors to the Commonwealth can recreate the famous ride by traveling the same roads (albeit paved) Revere traveled on that fateful night in 1775.
The mascots are the creation of known designer and puppeteer Randy Carfagno. Combining a passion that began at the age of five with a professional career spanning over 36 years, his work has appeared on Broadway, television, in feature films, theatre and commercials. Described as whimsical and meticulously crafted, Randy's prolific work reflects a wide range of styles and abilities.
Carfagno developed and honed his puppet building skills by working with the best in the field. He has appeared on Broadway as a puppeteer and has also built and performed in multiple shows with international marionette master Bil Baird of Bil Baird Marionettes. Carfagno also worked on numerous productions with Jim Henson Productions.
Carfagno founded his own studio where he has continued to hone his craft and produce high quality, sculptural work. Staffed by a talented team of artisans skilled in sculpture, building, painting and design, the studio has been consistently creating high quality work for more than 25 years. Specializing in all manner of character costumes, props and specialty items, the team comprises a prolific collection of artists with substantial experience in the world of entertainment and fashion. Clients include Disney, Bette Midler's Millenium Show, Madonna, Lou Reed's music video, Julie Taymor's Lion King, Hasbro and Broadway shows too many to mention.
The Eagles' new Sam Adams and Paul Revere characters will debut tomorrow, Satuday, Sept. 24, ahead of the Boston College football game against Wagner at Alumni Stadium. Ahead of the 1 p.m. kickoff, Sam Adam and Paul Revere will visit FanFest in the Flynn Recreation Complex. Tickets to the game are available at bceagles.com/tickets.
