Flynn Fund Appreciation Week: A Student-Athlete's Perspective
September 01, 2016 | Boston College Athletics, Men's Track & Field
Devaun Bovell '17, SAAC president and track and field standout, relays his thoughts on the generosity of donors
My name is Devaun Bovell. I am a rising senior on the men's track and field team and the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
I originally became involved in SAAC because of its goals to fulfill the Jesuit values of Boston College and to enhance the college experience for all student athletes on our campus. I've gone to the monthly meetings since my freshman year but didn't have a big role in SAAC until I was voted onto the board as a junior.
Applying to the board, then eventually to be president, was an easy choice for me as I'd seen how much SAAC impacted two of my teammates who were presidents of the committee my freshman and sophomore year.
I've learned through my time on the board that SAAC is a lot more than just the monthly meeting. The campus relations, community service, events, and marketing committees within SAAC help to connect student athletes to each other, the campus, and the community around us.
From scheduling community service events throughout the year to connecting with UGBC to get athletes' voices heard, this committee works tirelessly for BC's student athletes. I am grateful that I joined SAAC and look forward to leading the committee this upcoming school year.
Â
As a walk-on to the track team my freshman year, I never thought I would gain as much as I have by participating in college athletics. Even in such an individualized sport like track and field, there is a bond between our team that is not matched by any other organization I'm a member of at BC.
Some of my best friends here are my teammates. I've also learned valuable life skills through practicing, traveling, and competing including; time management, performing under pressure, and teamwork. There are so many opportunities available to student athletes on and off the field and your donations help to create those.
I want to thank you for investing in Boston College Athletics and in every student athlete at BC. Even as a non-scholarship athlete, I realize how much your donations affect me, my team, and the athletic department as a whole.
Being a part of the BC Athletics community has meant a lot to me. It has shaped my life at BC, and I can't imagine my college experience without it.
