Eagles Take Holiday Break For the Kids
December 13, 2016 | Boston College Athletics, Devlin Student-Athlete Formation & Succe
SAAC hosted its annual Adopt-A-Child Gift Wrap event as finals are set to get underway.
As the second day of Boston College's Study Days opened on Tuesday, many of the 750-plus Boston College student-athletes made their way up to the Shea Room in Conte Forum.
Â
This special trip to the epicenter of BC Athletics had special purpose: it was for the kids.
Â
Teams and staff members "adopted" children this holiday season and feted them with wish-list gifts and necessities they may not otherwise be in a position to receive. BC works with several community-driven organizations to fulfill kids' wants and needs during the holiday season.
This year, the Eagles granted wishes from a record 123 children as all 31 teams and 40 administrators and coaches also participated, many sponsoring multiple children. Last year, the total topped 100 children for the first time – 103 to be exact – which was up from 96 in 2014.
Â
''I always look forward to the adopt a child gift wrapping event each year," SAAC president and track and field captain Devaun Bovell '17 said. "Getting the whole Athletics community, student-athletes and administrators, together to give back is great. BC SAAC looks to empower student-athletes to serve the community around us as much as we can and hosting this event is one of our favorites. We realize that giving a couple gifts to a child that may not get one during the holidays otherwise has a huge impact on them."Â
Â
The Eagles' Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development, Jen Kentera, added, "The Adopt-A-Child event has become one of the most beloved holiday traditions in the Athletics department. It's a wonderful experience for our student-athletes, coaches and staff members to come together and be able to have a direct impact on our local community during the holidays."
