21 Set for Devlin S-AFE Service Trip Next Week

Eagles will travel to New Orleans to volunteer with the St. Bernard Project
Sunday morning starts a long, hard but immensely rewarding trip for 21 Boston College student-athletes.
They will depart for New Orleans and spend a week volunteering with the St. Bernard Project as part of the annual Devlin S-AFE Trip. This is the seventh such trip BC student-athletes have made.
Each Devlin S-AFE trip has three components: service, education and reflection – all core elements of a Jesuit education.
Each morning, the student-athletes will volunteer at a SBP work site, helping families who continue to rebuild from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina 10 years ago. The student-athletes will lend a hand in all aspects of rebuilding homes, including framing, dry-walling and painting.
Afternoons include visits to cultural locales in New Orleans, including the National World War II Museum and the Katrina National Memorial Museum, as well as a service visit to the NFL-YET Club, a local Boys & Girls Clubs outpost.
Each evening, the group will come together to reflect on the day, the trip and the meaning of "Men and Women for Others."
"This is a really special opportunity for our student-athletes to get away from campus and to get to know student-athletes on other teams while working on a project that is truly selfless and service oriented," Alison Quandt, Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development, said. "It says a lot about them as people that they are willing to give up part of their winter vacation to spend a week working on something for someone who they've never met. Opportunities like this are what make BC Athletics a special place."
New Orleans is one of the United States' top cultural destinations, so in addition to the service, education and reflection, the Eagles will also have opportunities to explore the city.
Quandt added, "Many of the student-athletes have never been to New Orleans, so the opportunity to see another part of the country and take in their great culture (and their food) is invaluable as these young people develop."
The student-athletes who are traveling to New Orleans include:
Lizzie Bohan (sailing), Alexis Bryant (women's soccer), Sean Burke (football), Jordan Chimento (softball), Ally Donahue (sailing), Hayley Dowd (women's soccer), Grace Drury (sailing), Griffin Elliott (sailing), Tim Joy (football), Madde Loosbrock (sailing), Peter Lynn (sailing), Lauren Michelson (rowing), Anne Murphy (softball), Madison Paulson (softball), Dylan Pritchard (men's soccer), Katelyn Reynolds (women's golf), Leah Settipane (field hockey), Mike Strizak (football) and Fiona Walsh (sailing).
