Devlin S-AFE Service Trip: Day 2
January 13, 2016 | Boston College Athletics, Devlin Student-Athlete Formation & Succe
The Eagles continued work on their house and visited the Hurrican Katrina Museum
For the seventh straight year, Boston College student-athletes are spending part of winter break in New Orleans on the Devlin S-AFE Trip. The week-long trip is centered on community service in partnership with the St. Bernard Project, helping families rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina 10 years ago.Â
Each day, student-athletes will reflect on the day's activities. For more information about the trip and it's purpose, check out the trip overview and the Day 1 recap.

Today was our second day working on our house, and we witnessed major progress in several rooms. We finished almost all of the drywall, learned to use new tools, and accomplished several of our group goals.
Even after only two days of work, it feels really good to see our hard work pay off and to see the whole group come together and form quick friendships. Despite the early morning wake ups and tiring days, the past two days have already been extremely rewarding.
After our work on the house, we got to go to the Hurricane Katrina Museum in the French Quarter. We all agreed that it was such an eye-opening experience. We learned more about the storm itself, as well as the aftermath and how New Orleans remained resilient over the past 10 years. Hearing survivors' stories, seeing footage of the immense damage, and learning the engineering behind the New Orleans levee system put the whole storm in a new perspective for all of us. It reminded us of the importance of our work down here, and helped us realize that our work on our house will really change lives.
After two tiring, yet rewarding days, we are looking forward to the rest of our trip.
We are excited to continue making progress on the house, exploring the diverse culture of the city, and growing closer as a group. In addition to a Tulane Basketball game and a delicious meal at Jacque Imo's, we have lots for look forward too on the rest of our trip.
Come back tomorrow for another update from a new group of student athletes.
