2015 Curley Award: Dr. Thomas Giblin '50
June 22, 2015 | Flynn Fund
On Saturday, June 20, Boston College Director of Athletics Brad Bates presented Dr. Thomas Giblin '50 with the 2015 John P. Curley '13 award.
The Curley Award honors an outstanding volunteer who has committed both time and resources to advance the efforts of Boston College, and especially the athletic department.
The award is named for BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame member John P. Curley '13, the senior football manager for the 1912 Boston College team and Graduate Manager of Athletics from 1929 to 1957 who is widely acknowledged as having brought Boston College Athletics into the modern era. The award fittingly recognizes Curley's lifetime commitment to Boston College and the athletic department, and those of each recipient since it was first awarded in 2001.
Dr. Giblin was exposed to BC Athletics from a young age. His father provided dental care to several players on the BC football team before the time helmets had facemasks. The players frequently visited and attend appointments at the Giblin household where Thomas was encouraged to hang around and meet the players.
He attended his first football game at age 6 in 1933 and travelled with the team as a child to the 1940, 1941, and 1942 bowl games -- the Sugar Bowl and the Cotton Bowl. His love for BC Athletics only grew stronger as time went on.
Dr. Giblin and his late wife Joan were some of the founding members of Blue Chips, currently known as the Flynn Fund.
In 2001, after Joan passed away, Dr. Giblin established The Joan S. and Thomas J. Giblin '50 Athletic Scholarship to provide financial assistance to a football or men's basketball player. In addition to his generous family scholarship, Dr. Giblin and friends occupy Box 49 for BC Football games to gather former student-athletes.
Dr. Giblin was a staple to many student-athletes memories at BC. He dedicated his time and energy towards the health and development of the players.
Boston College is grateful and appreciative of Dr. Giblin's life-long and overwhelming support of BC Athletics.
