June 14, 2015 | Boston College Athletics
Eugene, Oregon--In her first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, senior Liv Westphal had a stellar performance in the 5000 meters. Westphal entered the weekend coming off a strong performance at the NCAA Regionals. She finished third overall at the Eastern Regionals, setting her up in great position at the Championships.
In a highly competitive group, Westphal finished 8th overall, securing herself among the elite 5000-meter athletes and garnering a position on the podium. Her eighth place finish also earned her the title of All-American, an equally as impressive achievement. Liv got out to a quick start at the beginning of the race, holding her position in the top-three for a large portion of the start. By the one-mile mark, Westphal sat comfortably in fourth place, still vying for the lead with eventual first place finisher Emily Sisson of Providence. As the leading group began to stretch out, however, Westphal was unable to quite keep the pace as she slipped back to seventh, eventually falling to eighth, her finishing position.
The Outdoor Championships ended a miraculous year for Westphal. Liv was named an All- American in both cross-country and outdoor track. She set the French National record in the indoor 5000 meters. She was the ACC champion in XC as well as an ACC Scholar of the Year. Westphal also set the numerous school records in the 5000 meters in both the indoor and outdoor track seasons.
