BC Hosts Third Annual Cycle For Survival
April 27, 2015 | Boston College Athletics
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The third annual Boston College Cycle for Survival event, in memory of Lisa Gallup '09, takes place this Wednesday, April 29. The BC community will come together to raise money for rare cancer research, making donations and cycling for 25-minute intervals throughout the day in support of Team FabuLisa. The goal is to reach $10,000 in funds, a benchmark that Boston College shattered last year.
Lisa Gallup, daughter of Vicky and current Associate Athletics Director for Football Operations and Boston College alum Barry Gallup, worked as an overnight oncology nurse at New York Presbyterian after graduating from BC. Working in New York, she and her brother met Dave Linn, who founded Cycle for Survival with his wife Jennifer when she was diagnosed with sarcoma.
Through Cycle, teams spin together to raise money for rare cancer research at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The world's oldest and largest private cancer center, MSKCC is dedicated solely to rare cancer care and research. Lisa fell in love with Cycle for Survival, its philosophy and its cause
When Lisa was diagnosed with cancer in fall of 2011, Cycle for Survival only grew closer to her heart.
Cycle has truly taken off. Since its inception in 2007, Cycle has raised $76.5 million dollars to beat rare cancers. Cycle for Survival recently expanded to Boston in 2013 with Lisa's efforts to bring the foundation she so dearly loved to the city she loved equally as much.
With the Gallup family's support, the Boston event debuted on February 13, 2013 with unprecedented success. In its first year in the Hub, Cycle recorded its highest proceeds for new locations. The day was full of emotion for the Gallup family, as Lisa had passed just three months earlier after her 14-month fight with cancer.
Boston College continues to show its support for the Gallup family. For the third year in a row, BC will come together to support Cycle for Survival in Lisa's name. On Wednesday, April 29, student-athletes, coaches, and members of the BC community will cycle for 25-minute intervals throughout the day in the Flynn Recreation Complex spin rooms.
Softball kicks off the event at 7 a.m. while women's basketball, rowing, and cheer close out the day at 4 p.m.
Registration for the event will take place in the Conte Forum Student Athlete Lounge on the North Side. Participants receive a FabuLisa Under Armour shirt as well as refreshments to fuel up for their ride.
There will be a barbeque on the Beacon Street garage at 4 p.m. to culminate the day's events A check with the total amount raised for Team FabuLisa will be presented to the Gallup family at the end of the sixth inning of the BC baseball game vs. Bryant which starts at 3 p.m.
