Boston College Takes Third at the 2014 Terrier Invitational

The Terrier Invitational Meet concluded on Sunday November 23rd. Boston College walked away with strong third place finishes for both the Men’s and Women’s teams. The men’s team finished with 747.5 points following second place finisher Boston University, and the women finished with 883 points, following UMass Amherst.
Sophomore diver Cole Malatesta had an outstanding weekend, taking first place in the finals of both the 3 meter and 1 meter events.
The strongest competition came from the relay teams. In the 200 yd. Freestyle Relay, the women’s ‘A’ team of Maureen Barron, Emily Downs, Grace Kunkel and Madeline Mailliard took second place with a remarkable time of 1:35.32, beating their seed time by over 3 seconds. Likewise the men’s ‘A’ team of Dan Kelly, Nicolas Henze, Conor Chamness and John Mooers took first place with an exceptional time of 1:21.87. Later on, in the 400 yd. Medley Relay, the women’s ‘A’ team of Mailliard, Melissa Merwin, Jordan Parry and Downs took second place in the finals with a time of 3:51.81. The men’s ‘A’ team of Chamness, Andrew Stranick, Mooers and Henze also took second place with 3:21.85. In the 200 yd. Medley Relay, women’s ‘A’ team of Mailliard, Merwin, Parry and Barron dominated and took first place with 1:45.72, beating their seed time by almost 4 seconds. The men’s ‘A’ team of Josh Williams, Stranick, Mooers and Kelly was just as triumphant, taking first place with 1:30.45 and beating their seed by over 2 seconds.
Strong finishes were seen throughout all 3 days. In the finals of the 50 yd. Freestyle, Emily Downs took fourth place with23.98, followed closely by teammate Maureen Barron in fifth place with 24.11, and for the men, Dan Kelly took first place with 20.11. Downs excelled in the 200 yd. Freestyle, beating her seed time by almost 6 seconds and taking fourth in the preliminaries with 1:52.83, and then finishing in the finals with 1:52.44 to take second place overall.
In the end the Eagles proved to be strong competition all weekend. Next both the Men’s and Women’s teams will travel to Williamstown, Mass. to take on the Williams College Ephs on December 6th.
