CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College's Baldwin the Eagle was chosen as one of 16 college mascots to compete in the Capital One Mascot Challenge. The head-to-head challenge starts Thursday and is decided by fan votes. Fans can earn Baldwin more votes by completing social media-based challenges. There are three ways for BC fans to support Baldwin.
The first is by going to www.CapitalOneBowl.com and clicking "vote now" to earn one point. The second is to complete a weekly 25-point challenge of posting a specified message on Facebook or Twitter. The third way is to upload a photo or video expressing mascot pride, which will add 100 points to Baldwin's total. To earn points for the two social media challenges, responses must include the hashtag #CapitalOneBaldwin.
New social media challenges and new matchups will be announced every Monday. This week Baldwin is going up against Bucky Badger of the University of Wisconsin. To earn 25 points this week, fans must post a cheerleader-style cheer to Twitter or Facebook supporting Baldwin, using his specific hashtag. Fans can then take it one step further by uploading a picture of themselves doing the cheer to earn Baldwin 100 points.
College football expert Phil Steele will create a weekly power ranking of all 16 mascots that will include their statistical chances to win the mascot challenge. Voting will run from Thursday through Dec. 15.
The Capital One National Mascot of the Year will be crowned at the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1, 2014. The winning school will be awarded a $20,000 scholarship toward its mascot program. Each participating Capital One All-America mascot's school will also receive $5,000 for their respective mascot program.
