Bill Poutre, who spent the past five seasons as a successful Division 1 head coach, has been named an assistant coach for the men's and women's golf programs, Boston College Head Coach Trevor Drum has announced. He will be in charge of recruiting and player development.
Poutre, a Class "A" PGA Professional, started his coaching career at the University of Hartford in 2005. During his three-year tenure as the men's head coach, the team's national ranking improved by more than 100 spots. Additionally, the Hawks won three regular-season tournaments, two conference championships and advanced to the 2007 NCAA Division 1 East Regionals. The team's stroke average improved by 16 shots over the period and set a school record in his final season. Poutre's teams also excelled in the classroom earning a 3.30 cumulative grade point average over the three-year period. At Hartford, he was named conference coach of the year twice and was named the 2008 Eaton Golf Pride Division 1 Coach of the Year for the New England region.
Following the 2008 season, Poutre was named the Men's Head Coach at Long Beach (Calif.) State. During his two-year stint in Long Beach, the 49ers national ranking improved by more than 50 spots and the team's APR (Academic Performance Rating) was a perfect 1000 in both years.
Poutre, a Massachusetts native, is known as a top-notch recruiter. At Hartford, five student-athletes were #1 in their respective states prior to joining the Hawks. While at Long Beach, Poutre recruited the 2008 Orange County (Calif.) Player of the Year, three of the top-10 ranked California recruits in 2009 and the #1 ranked international recruit for 2010.
"Bill will be a great addition to our program. He has a wealth of experience and is one of the finest recruiters in the country," Drum said.
"I am looking forward to working with the young men and women at BC. It is exciting for me and my family to be a part of one of the finest athletic departments in the country while being back in our home state," Poutre said.
Poutre earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Hartford in 1988. He was a letterman on the Hawks golf team. He is a Sloan Fellow from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management graduate program. He is an active member of the College Golf Coaches Association of America and is a voting member of the NCAA Division 1 Golf Coaches Poll.
Poutre resides in Southborough, Mass. with his wife Christine and their children Samantha and Cameron.
