September 19, 2009 | Volleyball
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College volleyball team won its first of two matches on the day by defeating Hartford 3-1 in the Power Gymnasium in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
The Eagles are now 9-1 on the season while the Hawks fell to 5-6.
The Hawks and Eagles matched up well to start the match and the score was set at 18-15 in the first set before the Hawks used their first timeout of the day. Sophomore Mollie Kolosky kept up BC's attack with seven kills, and a service ace by sophomore Jordan Meredith to end the set gave the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
The second set brought with it more equal play between the two teams at the beginning, but the Eagles would have none of it as they powered forward to take a 21-14 lead nearing the end of the second frame. Behind sophomore Brennan Clark's five digs and five more kills from Kolosky, Boston College managed to take the second set 25-16.
Hartford refused to allow the Eagles to breeze through three sets to a win and managed to tie the set at 13 in the third. The Hawks increased their lead to 17-15 before the Eagles managed to pull to within two points, making the score 23-21. Even though they managed to rack up 18 kills as a team, the Eagles could not finish the comeback and the Hawks took the set, 25-22.
Looking to end it once and for all, the Eagles pushed the score to 15-9 in the fourth but Hartford mounted a comeback of their own and made it 18-17. Boston College called a timeout to rally the team and figure out a way to get the last few points it needed. The team came out firing and when the dust had cleared, the Eagles had their ninth straight win in hand.
The Boston College offense was led by Kolosky's 22 kills and freshman Krissy Mussenden's 49 assists for the match.
The Eagles' defense was backstopped by Clark, Meredith and junior Kristen Baader. Clark tallied 22 digs during the match while Meredith and Baader added 17 each.
Boston College will return to the Power Gym at 4:00 p.m. to face Rhode Island in the final match of the tournament.
