Moderator: Welcome to the live chat with Boston College new head women's basketball coach Sylvia Crawley. |
| Julie, Somerville: Will you get a stronger non-conference schedule? |
Coach Sylvia Crawley: Yes, we will get a better schedule in the future. However, our schedule is set for the upcoming season. |
| Dave (Boston): How are you going to utilize arguably last years top two freshman Carolyn Swords and Stephanie Murphy? |
Coach Sylvia Crawley: I can't wait to work with those two as well as our other post players. We will definitely play inside-out. They will love playing for a former post player. |
| Wayne (Westport): Hi Coach. I was wondering where the recruiting stops will be this summer. AAU tourneys, camps? |
Coach Sylvia Crawley: The staff will be at the AAU Showcase in Disney, Kings Island, Ohio, Oregon City, Murfreesboro, TN and Louisville, KY and many, many more. |
| paul mahoney Brighton: Will practices be open to hs coaches? What will be the protocol to attend? |
Coach Sylvia Crawley: You can email Chris Brann in advance at brannc@bc.edu. Chris will then notify me and I'll welcome you upon your arrival. |
| Arlington: Given all the pro sports teams in Boston, Boston can be a tough market for college sports attendance. Do you have any ideas or plans for increasing attendance? Boston College women's basketball is a great product -- I'd love to see attendance increase! |
Coach Sylvia Crawley: We plan to do a lot of community outreach. I will start with speaking engagements at various Rotary Clubs and Youth Centers. The players will do clinics at local elementary and middle schools. In addition, the games will be a fan friendly atmosphere with autograph sessions and meet and greets. Bottom line if the product is good, people will come. We are working hard to make that happen. |
| Pat(Holbrook): Now that you have been the coach for approximately 2 months what changes to you plan to incorporate in the style of play. |
Coach Sylvia Crawley: Boston College will become more of an up-tempo team. We currently average nearly 64 points a game. The top teams in the ACC average nearly 80 points per game. We have to gain more possessions in transition and through our defense. |
| Adam (Cape Cod): Congrats on being appointed head coach. Do you anticipate anything new for the upcoming summer camps you are holding? |
Coach Sylvia Crawley: The format of the camp will be new. It will be a very quality camp: including Q & A with the players, tour of our campus, tour of our athletic facilities and academic center. We will also take campers through a typical college practice during our Elite Camp. Campers will not only become better basketball players, but will also be prepared for the college experience. |
| John Harris (Hinsdale, Illinois): BC has become a very "hot" school in many parts of the country - particularly in far off places like California and the Chicago area. While you bring a recruiting strength to the southeast - perhaps we can offer a unique ACC experience to young women in places where our league foes may not have the same interest and where we can develop a strong recruiting niche. Do you intend to step up our recruiting in California and, in particular, the numerous Catholic high schools in Chicago? |
Coach Sylvia Crawley: We are recruiting throughout the entire country (international as well) for the best talent. We are now recruiting places in the west such as California, Colorado, Oregon, Arizona, and Washington. We will continue to recruit in Chicago and the mid-west states. |
| Anne (Boston): Coach Crawley, you suggested at the press conference announcing your hiring that BC needs to play more uptempo because the team needs to score more points. My impression from last year is that the issue was not the tempo of the offense or the number of possessions, it was turnovers, part of which was due to having such a young team. What is your plan to reduce the number of turnovers? |
Coach Sylvia Crawley: You are right, turnovers were a huge problem (nearly 20). We will eliminate turnovers as we - mature as a team, work to improve our inside/out passing, and implement an efficient press offense. |
