Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Eleven Boston College teams earned public recognition awards for their multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. All 11 teams posted scores in the top 10 percent of their respective sports. The academic standout squads included men's fencing, men's and women's skiing, men's indoor and outdoor track, women's indoor track, field hockey, women's soccer, women's tennis and volleyball.
The NCAA honored a total of 712 Division I sports for the 2006-07 academic year. The multi-year APR combined the past four years' scores. The teams make up 11.4 percent of the 6,272 Division I schools, while 192 institutions had at least one school on a top APR list.
The APR measures teams' academic success every semester by looking retention, eligibility and graduation rates. Each student-athlete receives one point for either returning to the same school or graduating and one point for being eligible to play.
BC tied with Stanford for the 18th-highest total number of teams. Yale brought home the top spot in the nation with 28 teams. The only other ACC school to make the top 25 was Duke, which tied for the 13th spot.
