Greensboro, N.C. - Boston College seniors Abigail Hasebroock, Kia McNeill and Caitlyn Young were three of the 40 ACC student-athletes honored as postgraduate scholarships recipients, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday. The Weaver-James-Corrigan Award is given to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate-level degree upon graduating. Each recipient will receive $5,000 to use toward further education.
Hasebroock, a four-year member of the volleyball team, is a three-time All-ACC Academic selection and a three-time Athletics Director's Award for Academic Achievement winner. She was honored for her community service involvement by garnering the ACC's Top-Six Award and the Massachusetts State Lottery Award. She also ranks among BC's all-time top 10 in both career blocks and attack percentage. Hasebroock will graduate in May 2008 with a degree in English from the College of Arts and Sciences.
McNeill, a four-year starter for the women's soccer team, was chosen to the All-ACC Academic team as a junior and senior. She is a two-time winner of the Athletics Director's Award for Academic Achievement and earned the Team Leadership Award as a junior. She represented BC at the NCAA National Leadership Conference in the summer of 2007 and was named a Sr. Thea Bowman AHANA Scholar twice. She earned NSCAA All-Northeast Region second-team honors and Soccer Buzz All-America third-team honors her senior season. McNeill will graduate in May 2008 with a degree from the Lynch School of Education with a human development degree.
Young, a midfielder for the field hockey team, earned the Athletic Director's Award for Academic Achievement every year since coming to the Heights in 2004. She was also named to the All-ACC Academic Squad in 2007 and the NFHCA Academic Squad in 2004 and 2005. In 2004, she was a Big East All-Star selection as well. As a senior, Young represented the Eagles in the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game played in College Park, Md. She will graduate in May 2008 with a degree from the Carroll School of Management with concentrations in finance and marketing.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan Award was named for three former ACC Commissioners, the late Jim Weaver, the late Bob James and Gene Corrigan. The student-athletes who received the honor performed with distinction in the classroom and on the playing fields and courts. They have also demonstrated outstanding conduct in the community. The 40 recipients will be honored on April 16, 2008 in Greensboro, N.C., at a luncheon hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club.
