The Boston College Athletic Department and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) are working hard this season to spread holiday cheer and help the local community.
“The BC community has done a great job giving back this holiday season,” said BC Athletics Director Gene DeFilippo. “Especially in these difficult times, it is important to remember to help those less fortunate.”
The athletics department’s recent toy drive collected more than 500 toys for the Toys for Tots program. Driven by stories in the media about the struggles of the organization to gather enough toys for the holidays, the department worked hard to surpass their donations in previous toy drives.
The drive was helped by a tremendous effort from the Boston College community. Toys were gathered from fans as well as faculty and staff members at recent basketball and hockey games.
“This is one of our best turnouts,” says DeFilippo. “I would like to thank our student-athletes, staff, faculty, alumni and fans for making it possible.”
Tuesday morning, student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators gathered in the student-athlete lounge to wrap gifts for local children. The annual gift wrap was organized by SAAC as part of their annual “Adopt-a-Child” program.
Each varsity team “adopts” a local youth in need and secures several gifts. Then the department comes together to wrap the gifts before distributing them to the community.
SAAC has also been very active with other activities including visits to local schools and hospitals. The women’s lacrosse team recently visited the Franciscan Hospital for Children in Boston for their annual cookie decorating event.
