The Boston College men's golf team turned in a very impressive first-day showing Saturday at the New England Championships, held at Triggs Memorial Golf Club in Providence, Rhode Island. Unfortunately for the hot-shooting Eagles, one day was all they got, as the tournament was cut short by today's inclement weather.
Sacred Heart University was declared the victor, as they led after Saturday's opening round. The Eagles finished in sixth place overall in the field of seventeen New England-area teams.
The Eagles relied on their overall consistency to perform so well in the team standings. Four of the team's top five golfers finished in the top-27 (out of an 85-man field), as those four all finished within two shots of one another.
Junior Robert Reed led the Eagles with a +3 round of 75. He finished in 11th place overall, just four strokes behind the leaders. A stroke behind Reed at a +4 76 was fellow junior James Granello. Just one stroke behind Granello, at a +5 77, were teammates junior Alex Snickenberger and senior Kyle Kelly.
With those four golfers all within six strokes of the frontrunners, it is no stretch to say Boston College was within championship-striking distance after Day One. Of course, the Eagles were not afforded the opportunity to improve upon Saturday's auspicious beginnings.
In the end, BC goes home with a solid sixth-place finish, besting such area-rivals as UConn (7th), Brown (9th), Harvard (10th), and BU (17th). Sacred Heart took first, with an overall score of 296 (+8). Central Connecticut and Yale tied for second with a score of 301 (+13), while BC's sixth-place total was 305 (+17).
The Eagles travel to the ACC Championships next weekend (April 20-22) in New London, North Carolina.
