Cross Country Achieves Goal At ACC Championships

Charlottesville, Va.-- The pre-season goals of the Boston College cross country team's were realized on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the ACC Championships when the women finished third and the men placed eighth in the twelve-team field.
Before the season began, Head Coach Randy Thomas wanted his girl's to aim for top-five in the ACC and hoped his senior captain, Patrick Mellea would finish in the top-ten individually. The women achieved their aim and were led by senior captain Mallory Champa and sophomore Brielle Chabot, who placed eighth and ninth respectively in the 6k race. Champa finished the race in 21:22, while Chabot crossed the line in 21:24. Fellow captain Nichole Lister (22:09), sophomore Jessica Discoll (22:21) and senior Jennifer Heyde (22:33) rounded out the women's top five performers.
The men's squad was led by their captain Patrick Mellea, who placed fifth overall in a time of 24:16 for the 8k course. Mellea's fellow captain, Timothy Ritchie, placed second on the team and marked a time of 24:50. Placing third and fourth for BC was senior Jeremy Zagorski and junior David Emerson, who finished back to back, crossing in 25:56 and 25:58 respectively.
Virginia won the 2007 ACC Championships for the men and had four runners place in the top ten. Florida State will take home the title for the women and were led by their stud runner Susan Kuijken, who took first place in 20:23.
Post-season action continues for both teams with the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Nov. 10 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The women look to defend their Northeast Region title and earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships held on Nov. 19.
