KEY LARGO, Fla. -- Swimming and diving took overall men's and women's titles at the Orange Bowl Swimming Classic in the Florida Keys on Saturday.
The Eagles took five first-place finishes, but it was the team's depth and consistent performance throughout the day that coach Tom Groden attributed to the win. That was despite his team arriving in Key Largo from Boston at 1 a.m. Saturday.
"They came prepared, and we got very good results," said Groden, who brought 69 of 71 of the team's swimmers to the contest. "We're a very deep team on both sides (men and women) and I'm sure that's what helped us to win."
Second and third place in both men's and women's divisions went to Whitworth College and Stony Brook University. Seven other colleges and universities competed.
The Classic is a highlight of a month-long training season for collegiate swimmers in the Keys. The competition at the Jacob's Aquatic Center featured 24 different swimming events.
