Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Three Boston College student-athletes, Dan Berglund (football), Kristen Madden (field hockey) and Brooke Queenan (women's basketball), have earned prestigious post-graduate scholarships from the Atlantic Coast Conference, according to an announcement made by commissioner John D. Swofford.
Berglund was one of only three student-athletes from the conference to receive the Jim and Pat Thacker Award, given annually to those who exemplify outstanding performance in athletics as well as the classroom and intend to further their education through post-graduate studies at an ACC institution.
A valuable scout team linebacker for the Eagles, Berglund was the recipient of the 2005 Scout Team Award at the MPC Computers Bowl this season. In addition to his on-field abilities, Berglund is active in the community and currently serves as the president of BC's Student Athletic Advisory Committee. Through the SAAC, Berglund coordinates a number of community-building projects for the university's student-athletes. For his efforts, Berglund also received football's Humanitarian Award.
Field hockey's Kristen Madden and women's basketball's Brooke Queenan were recipients of the Weaver-James-Corrigan Award, named in honor of three former commissioners of the ACC known for maintaining excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.
Madden started in every game since arriving at the Heights and scored a team-high 32 points in 2005, leading the Eagles to the NCAA Tournament. She earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division 1 All-America as well as All-ACC honors in her final season. Madden also excelled in the classroom, being named to the ACC's All-Academic team for 2005. She has earned the Athletic Director's Award for Achievement at Boston College twice, and was also a three-time Big East Academic All-Star.
Queenan has started every game as a junior and senior and has played in 105 career contests. She recently grabbed her 500th rebound, placing her 15th on the school's all-time list. Queenan has scored in double-digits 44 times in her career and has collected 13 double-doubles. Currently, the senior is averaging 14.5 points and 8.0 rebounds. In the classroom, she has earned the Athletic Director's Award for Academic Achievement three times and was a Big East Academic All-Star three times as well.
This year's recipients will receive $5,000 towards graduate education and will be honored at a luncheon in Greensboro, N.C. on April 13, 2006.
