Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College volleyball team fell to former conference rival Syracuse University (2-1) in four games (30-25,30-25,33-35,30-25) at home in the BC Invitational. BC then came back in the afternoon to beat the University of Maine (1-5) in straight sets (31-29,31-29,30-28). The Eagles are now 1-2 on the season.
The first game against the Orange was a tough one as Syracuse came out strong in the first two games. But the Eagles would not be defeated so easily. They came back in the third game of the match to win it 35-33. Although in the final game of the match Syracuse went ahead to beat the Eagles 30-25, there were many outstanding performances on the BC side. Verena Rost, another All-Tournament team selection, had 41 assists and 11 digs in the match and Allison Anderson finished with 21 digs.
In the final match of the tournament BC rebounded from their morning loss as they defeated the Maine Black Bears in three games (31-29,31-29,30-28) for their first win of the season. Maine now stands at 1-5 on the season.
BC was resilient in all three games against Maine, who played a hard fought match, but the Eagles ended on top.
Niemczewska had another standout game as she put down 19 kills, 11 digs and served up two aces. Captain Rost also put up key numbers leading the team with 38 assists while adding 14 digs. Junior Alison Shepp contributed 16 kills and had a .375 hitting percentage in the match.
