Junior Kyle Kelly shot four-over-par in the two-round Yale Spring Open played in New Haven, Conn. to lead the Eagles to their first tournament win in the 2004-05 season. The tournament was played at the Yale University Gold Club, a par 70, 6750-yard course.
BC did not have a player finish lower than 28th overall while Kelly and Jim Granello finished in the top five. The team shot a combined 590, finishing one stroke over UCONN to take the tournament title.
Kelly opened the tournament with a +5 round of 75. In the final round, he shot one-under-par (69). He was the only player in the tournament to shoot under-par in either round.
Granello finished tied for fifth last weekend. In the best showing of his collegiate career, the freshman, like Kelly, shot a 75 in the first round. He came back with a plus-one, 71 to land at fifth overall.
BC's supporting cast carried as much of a load as its top finishers. The men's squad will consistently post high finishes, but the five-player team totals determine the overall finish. This weekend, every Eagle showed up to play.
Freshman Bob Reed, who finished 17th overall in BC's last tournament, continued to contribute with a 19th-place finish. In total, he completed both rounds with a +10, including shooting three-over-par in the final round.
Junior Jim Roney posted his best finish of the spring season, coming in one stroke behind Reed. He shot a 151 (78-73) and, also like Reed, shot a three-over-par in his last round.
To round out the scorers for Boston College, freshman Alex Snickenberger, who topped the leaderboard at the William and Mary Invitational earlier this spring, finished tied for 28th overall. The Wellesley (Mass.) native shot rounds of 77-75 to finish with a plus-12 (152) overall.
Prior to this tournament, BC's lowest finisher had not cracked the top-50.
The men's team will play at the Navy Spring Invitational this weekend (April 23-24) in Annapolis, Md.
