Women's Swimming Tops Massachusetts 177-123

Amherst, Mass. - Liz Byron and Carolyn Bowman each won two individual events to lead the Boston College women's swimming team to a 177-123 victory over the University of Massachusetts at the Joseph Rogers Jr. Pool in Amherst, Mass. on Saturday. The Eagles won 11 of 16 events to earn their seventh win of the season.
BC opened the meet with a strong swim in the 200 medley relay. The Eagles took first and second place finishes in the event. The squad of Tanya Suryoutomo, Bowman, Byron, and Elizabeth Snyder won the heat with a time of 1:49.17.
Byron controlled the sprint freestyle events. The junior won the 50 with a time of 24.00 and the 100 by more than two seconds in a time of 52.42.
The Eagles dominated the distance freestyle events. In the 1000, Kim Garcia took home second place with a time of 10:46.49. Leigh Going and Karen Tellekamp hit the wall after Garcia with times of 10:56.14 and 10:56.90, respectively. Garcia also controlled the 500, by touching out a UMASS swimmer to steal the victory at 5:17.49.
BC continued to swim well in the breaststroke events. In the 100, Nikoll Julien won the heat with a time of 1:08.81. Erin Fransen finished third at 1:11.72. Bowman was victorious in the 200 with a time of 2:26.82.
Bowman and Torey Thelin led the Eagles in the butterfly events as BC earned wins in both. Thelin finished first in the 100 at 58.98, while Bowman won the 200 with a time of 2:09.42.
The Eagles closed out the meet with an impressive swim in the 400 free relay. The team of Suryoutomo, Holly Boucher, Snyder, and Byron won the race with a time of 3:36.56.
BC (7-2) will face cross-town rival Boston University on Tuesday, January 25 at 7 p.m.
